💡 Essential Tips to Limit Data Usage
To make your data last longer and avoid unexpected overages, follow these easy tips:
1️⃣ Disable Wi-Fi Assist / Switch to Mobile Data
Wi-Fi Assist (on Apple devices) or similar settings on Samsung and Google Pixel automatically switch to cellular data when your Wi-Fi connection is weak. While convenient, it can consume data without warning.
🍎 Apple: 👉 Go to Settings > Cellular > Scroll down to Wi-Fi Assist and turn it off.
🤖 Samsung:
👉Go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > Tap the three dots (top right) > Advanced > Turn off Switch to mobile data or similar options.
👾 Google Pixel:
👉 Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi Preferences >Turn off Switch to mobile data automatically.
2️⃣ Turn Off iCloud Drive/Cloud Sync Over Cellular Data
Cloud syncing (like iCloud, Samsung Cloud, or Google Drive) can use your data to sync documents or photos. It’s better to restrict these to Wi-Fi only.
🍎 Apple (iCloud Drive):
👉 Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Turn off Use Cellular Data.🤖 Samsung (Samsung Cloud):
👉 Go to Settings > Accounts and Backup > Samsung Cloud > Sync Using Wi-Fi Only.👾 Google Pixel (Google Drive):
👉 Go to Google Drive > Settings > Data Usage.
👉 Turn off Sync using mobile data.
3️⃣ Disable Automatic Backups Over Cellular Data
Backing up your phone’s data (photos, files, apps, etc.) to the cloud can consume a lot of data. Limit this to Wi-Fi only.
🍎 Apple:
👉 Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Ensure Back Up This iPhone is off or Wi-Fi only.🤖 Samsung:
👉 Settings > Accounts and Backup > Backup Data > Ensure Wi-Fi Only is selected.👾 Google Pixel:
👉 Settings > Google > Backup > Ensure backups only run on Wi-Fi.
4️⃣ Limit Background App Refresh / Data Sync
Apps running in the background can consume data unnecessarily. Restrict background refresh or syncing for apps you don’t use often.
🍎 Apple:
👉 Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Choose Wi-Fi Only or turn it off for specific apps.🤖 Samsung:
👉 Settings > Connections > Data Usage > Background Data > Toggle off for specific apps.👾 Google Pixel:
👉 Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver > Add apps to the whitelist or block background data for specific ones.
5️⃣ Check Streaming Quality Settings
Streaming apps like YouTube, Netflix, or Spotify often use high-quality settings by default, which can eat up data quickly. Lowering the quality can save a lot of data.
Open the app settings (e.g., Netflix, YouTube, or Spotify).
Look for Playback/Streaming Quality and reduce it to Low or Medium when on mobile data.
6️⃣ Disable Automatic Updates
App updates and system updates can download large files over mobile data. Restrict these to Wi-Fi only.
🍎 Apple:
👉 Settings > App Store > Turn off App Updates under Cellular Data.🤖 Samsung:
👉 Settings > Play Store > Auto-update apps > Choose Over Wi-Fi Only.👾 Google Pixel:
👉 Settings > Play Store > Auto-update apps > Select Over Wi-Fi Only.
